Lamea Hassan and her husband Bakhat packed their family of 17 into its 1974 Land Rover, to flee the rockets and missiles. They were wearing their best clothes, "to look American". US troops waved the car through one checkpoint as they left their village. But at the next checkpoint, American soldiers opened fire.
